Journey to the Ancestral Self: The Native Lifeway Guide to Living in Harmony With Earth Mother, Book 1
Published in Paperback by Barrytown/Station Hill (September, 1994)
Authors: Tamarack Songl and Tamarack Song
Average review score:

Beyond anything comparable
Many books have 10-20% useful information, padded with verbiage. This is a heart-touching book worth reading repeatedly- with 100% useful material, really more like 150%, because it is so good that as I grow, I go back and reread it. It is easy to read, and very profound. I got a B.A. in Anthropology, and all of my useful notes together do not equal what is in this book. This book, and Tad James' first book on Huna, are all I sought getting my BA, and didn't get. We don't know what healthy community is; we know only the pathology of the average. This describes the elements of healthy human living, of a healthy community. I paid to donate this book to 3 University libraries, so that other people, seeking as I was seeking, could find this. I didn't know this kind of high level awareness could be put in print. For my interests, I've never found a book even close to being as good as this one is.

Life Changing Perspective
This book not only gives a person a fresh perspective, it goes into detail HOW to begin anew - how to re-learn and re-live a common path and lifeway we all once walked. This is not a "dyed-in-the-wool" self help or new age book. The book shelves are lined with them. Anyone asking questions, and then questioning the resultant answers about their most basic belief systems will most likely renew their spiritual enthusiasm after reading this book. If you're a Seeker by nature, a questioner, this book will rejuvinate you. If you're living a lifestyle in the mainstream, and comfortable with what you know (or think you know), this book may challenge much of what you've been taught since you were a child. Especially re-assuring is the basis for the commonality we all share. Debunks the precept that Native Culture "primitivity" is inferior to the modern, civilized way of living. Outdoor enthusiasts will be challenged to view the world they love so much in a new light of Stewardship and Appreciation.

Really neat book- much better than anything comparable
Good review of Native American culture, focusing on Aninishnabeg. Written from the inside out. Really neat, because it's not a book for the head, it's for the heart.

Meditations with the Cherokee: Prayers, Songs, and Stories of Healing and Harmony
Published in Paperback by Inner Traditions Intl Ltd (15 July, 2001)
Author: J. T. Garrett
Average review score:

Harmony and Balance from a Cherokee Perspective
This is a wonderful and concise book which reveals the old wisdoms and teachings of the Cherokee. For most readers it will be a slightly different approach in learning to be in harmony with our modern world. The book teaches this harmony both with meditative exercises and with stories which carry the message - the teachings for our current and future generations. As mentioned in the introduction, "This book will take you on a journey of discovery about relationships." It is an excellent book and very much worth reading. It is the 3rd in a series of books by Dr. J. T. Garrett that teach us how to live in harmony and balance in this world. [His other books are Medicine of the Cherokee - The Way of Right Relationship and Walking on the Wind: Cherokee Teachings for Healing Through Harmony and Balance (written by his son, Professor Michael Garrett).]

Dr. Garrett does it again
Dr. Garrett continues to bridge ancient wisdom with modern practical ways of being , irregardless of ones cultural background this book provides simple meditations that can effect profound changes bringing harmony into ones life. You can read it over and over again gaining new insight with each reading. This book is a way of connecting us to what it means to be a human being on Mother Earth.

Thoughts from Crow
A journey of LIFE. A journey of beginning and beginning again, cycles within cycles. Messages from the Great One, Mother Earth, the Ancestors, and Spirit Guides. Dancing, singing, planting, loving, healing, giving thanks, helping others and just plan feeling good about yourself and all there is. Every time I read a part in the book I learn something new about our journey here on Mother Earth.
You Can Feel the connection of the Circle of Life and all the wonderful natural things that exist when you read or do the meditations.
This is truly a gift from the Ancestors through J.T. Garret. It is a gift for humanity. Thanks J.T. for being that "hollow bone", and that "window washer". The ones that came before us and the ones that are to come are THANKFUL!!!!

Raising Vegetarian Children : A Guide to Good Health and Family Harmony
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (25 September, 2002)
Authors: Joanne Stepaniak and Vesanto Melina
Average review score:

The definitive guide to raising vegetarian and vegan kids
Joanne Stepaniak and Vesanto Melina have created a much needed resource to serve parents and families, caregivers, and medical practitioners alike. After a thorough introduction discussing all aspects of vegetarian food and life choices (emotional, community, and psychological), the authors give a sound nutritional introduction. They then offer advice chronologically, beginning with nutrition for breastfeeding moms and continuing through introducing solids and feeding picky teens. The authors take a very down-to-earth approach, offering advice for parents of kids who are feeling alienated, or who want to eat meat away from home.

Each stage of life has different nutritional concerns. Stepaniak and Melina address the stages with age-specific menu plans using recipes from Part 3 of the book. The authors begin Part 3 by giving some helpful cooking recommendations for new or aspiring "healthy" cooks. There are many easy-to-prepare, kid-friendly recipes, replicating non-vegetarian favorites. Not all recipes have a 100% whole foods approach, and some include ingredients like "veggie dogs" or "veggie meats." The recipes range from beverages and breakfasts to snacks and entrees. All of the recipes include nutritional information, even the desserts. The book also has a very well organized index that makes it easy to pick up and find a piece of useful information. Raising Vegetarian Children ends with a large resource guide and bibliography, so those who want to dig deeper also know where to go.-- Reviewed by Amy O'Neill Houck

A Vegetarian Bible
Raising Vegetarian Children, A Guide to Good Health and Family Harmony, by Joanne Stepaniak and Vesanto Melina, is a comprehensive guidebook that provides a practical plan for making sure your child's diet is nutritionally adequate. The first two hundred pages are devoted to the basics: ethics, family and relatives, being different, eating out; Vegetarian Nutrition 101 addresses the Total Vegetarian Food Guide, which is a vegetarian's answer to the tired meat and dairy-laden food pyramid. Nutritional needs for all age groups from birth to teens are addressed in precise detail, from nursing moms, supplements, picky eaters, and finger foods, to "the unique needs of teens," including nutrition for athletes, healthy skin, body image and eating disorders. Over one hundred pages are devoted to kid-friendly recipes such as Fabulous French Toast, Cheez-A-Roni, Crispy Tofu Fingers, French Bread Pizza, Fajitas, Tacos, Oven Fries, German Chocolate Cake, Fruit Popsoycles, over 20 sandwich spreads/fillings, and my 13-year old vegan daughter's favorite, The Very Best Chocolate Chip Cookies. The vegetarian community has long awaited this primer, and like all other books by Stepaniak and Melina, this one does not disappoint.

The Ryrie Study Bible: New American Standard Translation: With Introductions, Annotations, Outlines, Marginal References, Harmony of the Gospels
Published in Hardcover by Moody Publishers (February, 1995)
Author: Charles Caldwell Ryrie
Average review score:

An excellent Study Bible!
We've used the Ryrie Study Bible since the early 80s. It's excellent for everyone who's interested in learning the Word of God in a more specific way. In the back of this Bible, there are important theological topics regarding the key doctrines of the Bible. Also the annotations, notes and everything else are arranged for easy understanding, and the information is precise. A great number of important subjects can be found and referenced quickly. It's always exciting to open this Bible. It's certainly money well spent. And every student will be spiritually enriched by the wealth of information found in the Ryrie Study Bible.

best quality and best clarity
I would highly recomend this version to anyone who wishes to do any serious study of the Word. Two key things to look for in selecting a good translation are quality and clarity. The NASB-U has plenty of both. Read it, study it, know it, learn it, live it!

Comparable with Life Application and NIV Study Bibles
Fantastic, in-depth, footnotes, cross-references, concordance, with quality comparable to the best-selling Life Application and NIV Study Bibles. Footnotes written by one man, instead of a large team of scholars, resulting in footnotes that relate to each other, from book to book. Recommended by several clerks at our bookstore, Christian Book and Gift, in Lawrence, KS.

Spiritual Harmony
Spiritual Harmony opened my eyes to the unkown help that we can have access to if we but ask. I have learned much about my guides, Angels and spiritual awareness. Never before have my eyes and soul been more open to the vastness of the spiritual realm. You will read stories of amazing miracles and poetry along with a gentleness of unleashing you from the restraints of standard religious restraints. I found this book truly engrossing and lifting to my soul.

Spiritual Harmony
Spiritual Harmony was a book that taught me how to listen to my Angels and meditate. It also offers amazing stories, and channeled poetry and prayers. It is a book that will make you think more about the mysteries of life and what God has to offer if you open your heart.

Spiritual Harmony
I found Spiritual Harmony to be an enlightening and delightful book full of inspiring stories, information and poetry. I would recommend any one that is in search of their spiritual path to read this book that explains guides, spirit and eye opening stories of love and light to be shared with one and all.

220 Aran Stitches and Patterns - Volume 5 (Harmony Guides)

What a great resource
Whenever I decide to design a sweater with cables, I turn to this book. It's easy to use and the charts are great. It's a wonderful asset for any knitters library.

Designing your own Aran Isle made simple
This book provides a brief history of Aran knitting, an overview and how to explanation of aran knitting techniques, explanation of how to design an Aran Isle sweater, and written as well as chart instructions on 220 patterns. What I found most helpful was the grouping of patterns according to row repeats, from 2 row patterns to 48 row patterns. There were 14 1/2 page examples of Aran combinations with tables showing the row and stich number for each pattern used. These combination examples illustrate how the Aran designs of different length and with can be group to create unique designs.

This book is ideal for someone familiar with Aran Isle knitting who wants the freedom to design their own creations. A book most useful to intermediate to advance knitters, it covers the basics so well it would also be helpful to beginners with an interest in design.

Advanced Harmony, Theory and Practice
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (12 March, 1992)
Author: Robert W. Ottman
Average review score:

Great for those new to music theory.
As aa former computer science professor who is trying to teach himself the fundamentals of music theory, I have found this book exceedingly easy to read and learn from. Along with his book on Elementary Harmony, I feel I have received a sound and very useful emersion into the world of music harmony.

recommended
This book and its companion, the author's "Elementary Harmony", though a bit plodding, are the most practical part-writing texts still available. (Consider, however, that I am familiar only with an earlier edition.)

Also recommended: PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST by JEFF BURNS.

Basic Harmonic Progressions: A Self-Instruction Program (Norton Programed Texts in Music Theory.)
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (December, 1985)
Authors: John L. Clough and Joyce Conley
Average review score:

Self Teaching Musicians Absolutey Need This Book
Well, as the name of the book suggests, it is not a thorough study of Tonal Harmony, insted, it is a perfect self-instruction guide in the voice leading of basic harmonic progressions. That is something that one cannot do efficiently without a tutor.

The book carries you through 7 parts:

1-PreDominant Chords: IV, II, II6

2-Prolongation of I

3-Other 5/3 and 6/3 functions 1 (prolongation of predominant harmony)

4-Other 5/3 and 6/3 functions 2 (IV, IV6, III, VII)

5-6/4 Chords

6-7th Chords (Other than V7)

7-Diatonic Modulation

One magnificent feature of this book is that it has been written with solely the student in mind. Distributed among the 7 parts above, there are 25 'sets' that consist of an average of 50 questions each, most of them being part writing exercises(and some of them quite difficult, especially soprano harmonizations). The remaining questions usually introduce the new concept, and review the old topics. That is very useful, because before you move on to another type of progression, the book does its best to remind you what you've been practicing in the previous sets. It is needless to say that all answers, with alternatives and comments, are in the book. For each part, there's also a short test. (Which suffices to warn you what your weaknesses are in that Part)

I believe that the Self Teaching musician would benefit greatly from this introductory book, before he moves on to traditional methods. Moreover, this book is sure to render the 'traditional method' useful for him. 'Basic Harmonic Progression' may be the only source to end the harmonic nightmare of autodidacts.(Recommendation for Traditional Method: Roger Sessions' Harmonic Practice -unfortunately out of print-)

Highly recommended, I would like to congragulate Norton for yet another magnificent book.

Perfect for Catch-uppers
C&C's second book in their programmed theory text series certainly lives up to expectations. It provides a strong emphasis on practical application of the rules of voice leading, allowing one to use them directly in composition, the techniques of analysis are neither cumbersome nor simplistic. For those of us who have some catch-up to play with our more advanced musical peers, this book will have a novice spouting progressions like f#: I-VII6-I6-IV-II-V-V7-I in no time flat.

The Blended Family: Achieving Peace and Harmony in the Christian Home
Published in Paperback by Providence House Pub (21 March, 2000)
Authors: Edward Douglas and Sharon Douglas
Average review score:

From a married but non-blended family perspective
Having the opportunity to pre-review this book prior to release, and being married with two children in a non-blended family I wondered how the book could benefit me and my household.

I found it easy to read with personal testimonies that any family can relate to and learn from. I walked away from the book being more thankful for the things I have, and I acquired a stronger commitment to keep my household intact.

I would like to thank the authors of this book for making my husband and I "Renew our marriage vows"

TOP 10 things we liked about your book!
Salvation/Christ focused messages, encourages married couples to stay together/grow stronger, your personal testimonies, written from a realistic and christ centered perspective, targeted specific issues such as finances, discipline, names, visitation, respect, etc., information helpful, applicable and true, not too long, gets the message across clearly, and husband and wife perspectives and input. This book can give anyone married, single, remarried, or engaged a biblical view and understanding of what Christ wants to do in our homes. The authors do an exceptional job at directing the reader to God's plan and provision for marriage and family. Their personal experiences are a testimony to what God can do if we let Him. THE BLENDED FAMILY encourages trust in Christ and the word of God as the blueprint for building a strong family. A must read for anyone in or about to become a blended family.

Chakras: Balance Your Body's Energy for Health and Harmony
Published in Paperback by Sterling Publications (01 September, 2000)
Author: Patricia Mercier
Average review score:

COMPREHENSIVE, BRILLIANT AND BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED
Before reading this book, I had at best a passing interest in the subject of the chakras. Many of the other books I considered purchasing that dealt with this subject, were dense and difficult to understand. This book however is neither.

The Chakras is a concise yet comprehensive treatment of the topic of the chakras. It is written for your modern day person and draws information from a variety of different teaching systems and cultures. The result is a synthesis of the most important and well-studied "new age" ideas and concepts. This is much more than a book about chakras and touches upon diverse subjects including the use of color and sound for healing, as well as shamanism. The illustrations are simply gorgeous and the text includes many useful techniques for meditation and visualization. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in expanding their perceptual horizons and learning about the chakras.

FYI- Knowledge of the chakras is critical for the understanding of shamanism and Toltec sorcery. I also recommend: 1) Shaman, Healer, Sage-Alberto Villoldo. This book gives a shamanic description of the chakras and explains how this knowledge fits in to the healing practices of shamans.2) The Path- Esmeralda Arana. Explains how knowledge of the Chakras plays a role in sorcery.

Balance your bodies energy centers for health and well-being
I highly recommend this book if you want to learn all there is to know about chakras. Drawing on scientific research and a western approach, it explains the seven major chakras in detail using colorful photography and charts. It also explains the 21 minor chakras. I especially enjoyed learning how to nourish and heal my chakras through the many meditation, breathing, and visualization exercises. To my delight, it also includes a detailed account of how to heal your chakras using crystals, pendulums, colors and sound. My health and general well being have improved after doing the exercises and has given me a new perspective of how I view the world. I feel more at peace with myself and know I will refer back to this book time and time again.
